  • 1. About checklists

Using Checklists is easy. To view the options, move up or down the screen using the arrows on the right-hand side. When you have decided which one you want, simply click on the box beside the item you wish to select.
    Help Index

The Electronic Labour Exchange will match you only on the basis of the information you enter on the checklist, not the free text. However, we encourage you to supply free text because it can be very useful for employers or work seekers who want additional information about their matches.

Please remember that because of the way we have grouped our 25,000 job titles, some of the categories in the checklists may not apply to you. If you come across some of these when you are filling out your checklist, don't worry. Just leave them blank, and move on.

    2. About profiles

A completed checklist is called a profile. Profiles can be reviewed, modified, saved, advertised or used to perform a job match. We suggest you create profiles for all the areas in which you have skills. They will be stored for you in a personal account that you can access by entering your usercode and password.

REVIEW: Once you have completed your checklist, the Electronic Labour Exchange gives you the opportunity to review your profile. This feature allows you to see how your profile looks in a résumé/job description format.

MODIFY: If you wish to change the content of a profile, please use the modify feature.

JOB MATCH: This is an excellent feature that allows you to perform a match immediately. You don't have to save or advertise your profile to do this. It can be done automatically and anonymously.

Employers will first see Exact Match(es). These are work seeker's who match all of the employer requirements. Employers wishing to see candidates who come close to meeting their requirements (80% to 99%) may do so by choosing the NEAR MATCH option.

Work seekers see only those job opportunities for which they meet the employer's requirements. To ensure that employers can match to you, always remember to save your profiles.

SAVE: To save your profile, you will need to create a usercode and a password. Your profile will be saved on the Electronic Labour Exchange for 1 year.

ADVERTISE: To advertise your profile, you must create a usercode and a password. You must also provide some contact information. If you are a work seeker and wish to remain anonymous, simply choose the "electronic mail box" option and your identity will be protected

Work seekers and employers may advertise for a maximum of 90 days at one time. Both work seekers and employers may re-advertise at any time. If you do re-advertise your profile, the Electronic Labour Exchange will automatically save it for one year.

CONTACT INFORMATION: If you have more than one profile and wish to change your contact information, you need to change it on only one profile. The system will automatically update all your other profiles.

    3. About usercodes and passwords

If you wish to save or advertise your profile, please create a usercode and password. This will ensure that only you have access to the profiles you created.

Your usercode must be 7 to 10 letters/numbers, and the password must be 4 to 10 letters/numbers. Please remember that if you enter the system through NEW user, and then try to save a new profile under your existing usercode and password, you will get a message informing you that the codes are already in use. Even if you delete all your profiles, the Electronic Labour Exchange will continue to store your contact information, usercode and a password.

    4. About The Electronic Labour Exchange mail box

Work seekers who prefer to remain anonymous can create an ELE mail box by selecting the mailbox option when advertising their skill profile. If an employer matches their job profile to your advertised skill profile, the employer will be asked to contact you at your Electronic Labour Exchange mail box. It is then up to you to contact the interested employer. Please note that profiles are saved in mail boxes for only 5 days, so remember to check for messages regularly.

    1. How will the Electronic Labour Exchange help me recruit qualified candidates?

If you are looking for qualified candidates, simply check off all the relevant boxes on the Electronic Labour Exchange checklist that describe the skills, qualifications, experience level and other information you require for the position. Once you have completed a profile, the Electronic Labour Exchange searches the work seeker database. Within seconds, it gives you a list of candidates who meet your requirements. You can also look for more candidates by advertising your profile. A convenient "save" feature lets you keep the profile in the database for future matches or advertising.

    2. What is the maximum number of profiles I can enter on the system?

There are no limits to the number of profiles you can create. The first profile you enter into the system is created as a "new" user profile. All subsequent profiles will be created as "returning" user profiles, and can be accessed by entering your usercode and password.
    FAQ Index

As a "returning" user, you can see a list of all the profiles you have saved on the system. In addition, you have the option to change and/or delete any profile.

    3. What do I do once I have typed in a "job title"?

The system searches the "job title" database for the title you entered, and gives you either the appropriate checklist or a list of similar job titles. If you get a list of job titles, highlight the one that most closely resembles the job you are looking for or looking to fill. You can do this by clicking on the title, then clicking OK to continue.

If the job title list is unsatisfactory, you can return and choose a completely different "job title" or select "Related Occupations" to see other related titles.

    4. How do I modify my profile once I have saved/advertised it?

To change your profile after it has been saved/advertised, start on the "returning user" page. A list of your active profiles and advertisements will appear on the screen. To modify, delete or cancel an advertisement or profile, select the profile from the list, then click the appropriate button below it. You may modify your profiles as often as you wish.

    5. What about similar job titles, do I need to enter a profile for each one?

The same checklist is often used to profile different jobs that share elements such as level of education and training and common skills. There are 25,000 titles on the system, and some 500 checklists. There may be many titles "attached" to a particular checklist. To find out whether another checklist may be more appropriate for you, simply highlight a title from the search results list, and select "view". A list of additional titles associated with the particular checklist will appear. You do not necessarily have to fill out a separate checklist.

Once a particular checklist has been completed, you need not complete it again for other job titles. The ELE does not match on "job title" but rather on the skills selected in the checklist. Checklists have an identifying number on the upper right hand. For example, if you complete the checklist for the job title "administrative secretary", you will note that the checklist number is 1241. This is the same checklist, number 1241, that you would complete for the job title "executive secretary". On the other hand, when you call up the checklist for "corporate secretary", you will note that the checklist number is 1222.

    6. How are "job titles" classified in the Electronic Labour Exchange?

"Job titles" are classified according to the National Occupational Classification system that groups occupations by level and type of skill required. There are 3 tiers to the NOC structure: the major group, the minor group and the occupational unit group. Job titles used in the ELE are attached to one of 522 occupational unit groups.

    7. How do I perform a job match?

Users have two ways to obtain job match results:
    1) Once you have completed and reviewed your profile, click on the "perform a job match" button at the bottom of the screen.

    2) As a returning user, you can select one of the profiles you saved, then select the "perform a job match" button at the bottom of the screen.

    8. What if, as a work seeker, I get repeatedly rejected?

This would be a good indication that you need to either upgrade your skills or acquire new ones to compete in your chosen field. We suggest you visit the CanWorkNet site at http://www.workinfonet.ca, where you will find information on skills upgrading options.

    9. How can work seekers' personal information be protected when using the Electronic Labour Exchange?

The Electronic Labour Exchange recognizes that some work seekers may wish to protect their personal information or to apply for jobs anonymously. To help you do this, we created the mail box option. The mail box option appears as a check box on the contact information page. To use this option when you are advertising a profile on the system, simply click on the box. The system will ensure that no one will see your name or contact information. Employers wanting to contact you will be asked to leave a message in your mail box. These messages will saved in your mail box for only 5 days, so please remember to check it regularly.

    10. How long does a message stay in the mail box?

Currently, a message from an employer will be saved in a work seeker's mail box for 5 days.

    11. How do I access my mail box?

When returning as a work seeker, you will see a "you have mail" option button on the right hand side of the "returning user option" screen. If you do not have any mail in your mail box, you will simply see the "mailbox" button on the bottom of the screen. Mail messages are active for 5 days and then are deleted. So remember to check back frequently.

    12. Does the Electronic Labour Exchange accept résumés?

The Electronic Labour Exchange does not let you post résumés. However, your skill profile, including any other information you may wish to provide about yourself, is a type of resume that can be advertised to thousands of potential employers.

    13. As a work seeker, can I browse a list of work opportunities available on the system?

The ELE does not provide this function. We are a skills matching service. Should you wish to browse a list of work opportunities, we suggest visiting the Internet Job Bank at http://jb-ge.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca. However, we'd like to remind you that your chances of finding work will increase if you complete a skills profile in the ELE before you try a Job Bank.

    14. As an employer, can I browse work seekers' skills profiles in the Electronic Labour Exchange?

To view work seekers' skills profiles, you must first create a work profile, then match it with a seeker's skills through the ELE database. Only profiles matching at least 80% of your requirements will be displayed. This feature saves you the time you would spend "screening" profiles for work seekers with the skills you require.

    15. The system tells me my usercode is already in use when I try to choose one!

This is the system's way of telling you that the code you have chosen is one that has already been picked by someone else. The system requires that usercodes be unique, so you must choose another code. To try another code, select the "Back" button from the browser, then return to the "save/advertise" screen and enter your new code.
